When I Was the Forest, by Meister Eckhart

When I Was the Forest

When I was the stream, when I was the
forest, when I was still the field,
when I was every hoof, foot,
fin and wing, when I
was the sky
itself,

no one every asked me did I have a purpose, no one ever
wondered was there anything I might need,
for there was nothing
I could not
love.

It was when I left all we once were that
the agony began, the fear and questions came;
and I wept; I wept. And tears
I had never known
before.

So I returned to the river, I returned to
the mountains. I asked for their hand in marriage again,
I begged--I begged to wed every object
and creature.

And when they accepted,
God was ever present in my arms.
And He did not say,
"Where have you
been?"
For then I knew my soul--every soul-
had always held
Him.

When I was the stream, I was thewater
when I was the
forest, I was the tree, when I was still the field,
I was the wheat, when I was every hoof, foot,
fin and wing, I was the creature, when I
was the sky
itself, I was singing,

no one every asked me did I have a purpose, nor did I have a thing, no one ever
wondered was there anything I might need, nor did I want
for there was nothing
I could not
love.

It was when I left all we once were that
the agony began, the fear and questions came;
and I wept; I stopped weeping. In an unknown sea. And tears
I had never known
before. Began to flow as me.

So I returned to the river, I returned to
the mountains. I returned to the sky.
I asked for their hand in marriage again,
I begged--I begged to be united to every object
and creature.

And when they accepted, the living presence of
God was ever present in my arms.
And God did not say,
"Where have you
been?" What have you been doing?
For then I knew my spirit--the spirit of everyone-
had always been held by What Is not limited
.
